Training level - intermediate ( basic working knowledge of houdini and unreal is required)
description
Hello everyone and this is the tiny robot project. The idea behind this training was to go through the entire process of making a fully rigged mechanical model that was ready for animation in unreal engine.
In this project , we will model the robot in Houdini, then unwrap it, add bones and do basic bone capture so the model can be exported to unreal. Then we take a small detour to substance painter so we can make the shader for the robot. Then we import the model into unreal and rig it using control rig to make it ready for animation and finally we setup the shader and add lights for final rendering.
Main Body - Modeling the Robot’s central body
Eye - Modeling the eye and the eyelid
Body Light - Making the head light for the robot
USB-A Port - Modeling the ports at the back of the robot head
USB-C Port - Modeling additional ports on the robot
Antenna - Modeling the antenna on the robot head
Shoulders - making the shoulders for the robot body
Upper Leg - Making the upper legs
Lower leg - Modeling the lower legs
Feet - Modifying the lower legs to make the feet for the robot
Skeleton Points - Building up the points which will help us generate the skeleton for the robot
Skeleton generation and capture - Building the skeleton using kinefx and using geometry capture
UV unwrapping - Unwrapping the final model
Substance Painter - Painting textures for the robot
Unreal basic setup - Importing the FBX robot model and making the basic control rig
Unreal head and legs IK setup - Setting up the basic head control and setting up IK for the legs
Unreal eye setup - Using the aim constraint for the eye
Unreal Antenna Setup - Using verlet to add spring motion to the antenna
Unreal Head secondary motion - Adding secondary motion to the head using verlet and spring quaternion
Unreal Shader setup - Making the final shader for the robot and adding lights
Unreal control rig and shader parameter control - Connecting the light emission to the leg controllers
